PC owners have faced an agonizing wait for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate to be released on their device of choice. After all, the latest iteration in Ubisoft’s series has been available for console players since last month. Thankfully, the wait is now over, with the PC port of the title launching today.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate saw release for PS4 and Xbox One consoles on 23 October, but Ubisoft held back on the PC release. So far, the title has been well received in its console forms, with praise for its dual protagonists Evie and Jacob Frye. It’s been seen by many as a strong return for the franchise after a difficult year, with plenty of fun to be had without revolutionary changes being made to the series’ format.
Ubisoft no doubt knows the importance of a quality PC version of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. After all, the company saw the ire of the video game community after the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, the cooperative gameplay-focused previous iteration. The game suffered from huge problems upon its release in November 2014, with the PC version in particular suffering from serious bugs and major framerate issues.
Therefore, it’s imperative that Ubisoft launches the title for PC in the best shape imaginable. The publisher has a dark mark against its name in the wake of Unity’s release, as the title was one of the main villains in a bad week for the video game industry. The company can no doubt win back the hearts of players – particularly if the strength of the console version of the game transfers over to its PC counterpart.
A lot has changed over the course of a year, too, and with Steam refunds now up and running there is perhaps even more chance for damage to Ubisoft over a failed PC launch. Batman: Arkham Knight proved to be a strong test of how Steam refunds worked in action, with all purchasers being offered the chance to get a refund on the broken PC port of the Warner Bros-published title. Ubisoft can ill afford to make the same mistakes, or the damage will be both critical and commercial.
So far, there have only been a handful of reports on how Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is running on PC, but thankfully the news is generally positive. PC World has given positive feedback, suggesting that the game is no Unity. Meanwhile, Rock Paper Shotgun has stated that there have been no technical issues so far, aside from some struggles on ultra high settings. Let’s hope that the staggered PC release has worked in creating a solid version.
