Rise of the Tomb Raider For PC Beating Xbox One Sales

An official report reveals that Rise of the Tomb Raider has had far more success on the PC market than the Xbox One, selling many more copies in its first month.

Months after its initial release for the Xbox One, Rise of the Tomb Raider is now available for PC, and its sales are skyrocketing. According to a new report, the PC version of Rise of the Tomb Raider has vastly outsold the Xbox One version when comparing their first month of sales.

According to a monthly report by SuperData, Rise of the Tomb Raider for the PC has sold three times the amount of copies in its first month of being on sale in comparison to the Xbox One version. While neither Microsoft nor Square Enix have confirmed these numbers, Microsoft did previously state that one million copies of Rise of the Tomb Raider for the Xbox One have sold.

While Rise of the Tomb Raider certainly hasn’t been considered a failure, the fact that its sales have improved months after its initial release does somewhat mirror the success of its prequel, the Tomb Raider series reboot. Originally considered to be a sales failure, 2013’s Tomb Raider went on to become a massive success for Square Enix, officially becoming the best seller of the entire Tomb Raider franchise, going all the way back to its origins in 1996.

While Rise of the Tomb Raider has been generally been considered a success, both critically and in terms of sales, it didn’t have the best timing. Despite the fact that Fallout 4 was one of the most eagerly-awaited games worldwide, Microsoft went forward with its plans to release Rise of the Tomb Raider on the same day as Fallout 4. While Rise of the Tomb Raider still managed to sell at least a million copies for the Xbox One, the temporary console exclusivity surely kept many fans from being able to access to the sequel, which probably caused sales to take another hit.

Chances are sales of Rise of the Tomb Raider will only continue to climb, considering that PlayStation 4 users are still waiting for their chance to play the game. In addition, many PC gamers may have chosen to hold out to see if the port was a good one before purchasing it, or they may be waiting for the next Steam sale to pick it up. With more DLC on the way and Rise of the Tomb Raider receiving awards, chances are sales on all systems will rise substantially.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is currently available on PC and Xbox One, and is expected to launch for the PlayStation 4 later this year.
