According to a statement made by the developers at DICE, not only will Star Wars Battlefront‘s forthcoming Episode 7-inspired The Battle of Jakku DLC have a new map, but it is also set to contain a fresh 40-player mode called Turning Point. Turning Point’s gameplay is focused on players taking on the role of Rebels to locate Empire bases in order to take control of them.
The new area of Jakku (as seen in a recent teaser trailer) will have three separate Imperial bases in Turning Point, and – as Rebels capture them individually – more time will be added to a countdown clock. This, in turn, will make other bases available for takeover, with each subsequent seizure becoming “increasingly challenging” as matches progress. The final goal of Star Wars Battlefront‘s new mode is to take control of Empire’s third zone “where the final stand will take place”.
When Rebel players have begun seizing an Imperial base, the forces of the Empire cannot reclaim it. In a statement regarding Turning Point’s mechanics, Star Wars Battlefront‘s lead level designer Dennis Brännvall explains the concept of taking over a station more fully, saying:
“Let’s say there’s only 25% left of the claim process and the Empire has managed to drive away the Rebels. This means that the Empire have to choose between defending this vulnerable point or another part of the map. The Rebels in turn need to decide where their next attack should be.”
Turning Point will also let players pilot vehicles. Airspeeders and AT-STs can be controlled, with the latter taking on more of a defensive position, as opposed to their usage in Walker Assault. And while the action is primarily rooted in infantry gameplay, DICE has proclaimed that the air above won’t lack combat, saying, “The battles are ever-present; debris will be falling from the skies, and you’ll even see a Super Star Destroyer come crashing down during the round”.
Battlefront fans in the UK will be treated to an event hosted by Electronic Arts this coming Monday, November 30, beginning at 7 PM GMT that features the DLC, as the company is holding a Battle of Jakku: Live from London bash. Should fans in the area wish to participate and play the add-on before its release, they need to sign up before November 25 at 11:59 PM. For those who cannot attend, the gathering will be streamed live from the EA Star Wars Twitch account on Monday.
With The Battle of Jakku DLC being free, Battlefront fans will certainly be happy to nab the additional content, but it remains to be seen as to whether or not the new Turning Point mode can keep gamers engaged in the long-run. Of course, developers are also offering a Season Pass with 16 new maps to release over the course of next year to supplement the shooter’s base materials, but many have balked at its hefty $50 price tag. Nevertheless, there are definitely gamers who want to keep up with Battlefront as it evolves, so perhaps shelling out $150 for the Ultimate Edition will pay off in the end for those looking to keep their skills sharp.
Star Wars Battlefront is out now and is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with The Battle of Jakku DLC releasing on December 1, 2015 for players who pre-ordered the game, and on December 8, 2015 for everyone else.
